Treating Your Rash

Get the facts on your rash and how to treat it.

Rashes are incredibly common, and it’s something that everyone will deal with at some point. The good news is that most rashes will go away on their own, but that doesn’t mean that you are curious to know what it could be. Plus, it’s important to know when your rash may need to be evaluated and treated by our Chicago, IL, dermatologist Dr. Elizabeth Fahrenbach.

What causes rashes?

Rashes can be caused by viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infections. Allergic reactions or certain skin disorders can also cause them. Common causes of rashes include,

  • Atopic or contact dermatitis
  • Hives
  • Eczema
  • Rosacea
  • Ringworm
  • Shingles
  • Chickenpox
  • Psoriasis
  • Pityriasis rosea
  • Lupus
  • Scabies
  • Tick or flea bite
  • Poison ivy or sumac exposure

How can I treat a rash on my own?

You can follow some at-home tips to help ease your symptoms until the rash goes away. Of course, rashes caused by bacterial or fungal infections will often require medication from our Chicago dermatologist. Your rash might be bacterial or fungal if it’s red, scaly or itchy. Minor rashes can often be treated with,

  • Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream
  • Oral antihistamines
  • Calamine lotion to alleviate itching
  • Oatmeal baths, which can also relieve itching
  • Cold compresses or showers
  • Apply aloe vera or coconut oil

Should I call my dermatologist about my rash?

Okay, so your rash might not be pretty, but it is usually not a cause for concern. But it is important to recognize when your rash may be worth turning to our Chicago dermatologist for care. It’s time to give us a call if your rash,

  • Continues to spread or covers more than 10 percent of your body
  • Is getting worse
  • Isn’t responding to home care
  • Is severely painful
  • Is blistering, oozing, or crusting over
  • Is accompanied by a fever, stiff neck, or difficulty breathing

Certain infections or skin disorders will require more nuanced treatment than anything that you’ll be able to get over the counter. The only way to get the proper treatment for your rash is from our Chicago, IL, skin doctor.
