What Is Causing My Rash?

Do your rash symptoms warrant a trip to the dermatologist’s office?

Rashes are one of the common skin problems that our Chicago, IL, dermatologist Dr. Elizabeth Fahrenback treats. Since rashes can range from mild to potentially dangerous, it’s important to be able to recognize the signs that it’s time to turn to a dermatologist. Here are the most common types of rashes,

Chickenpox

This viral infection is more common in school-aged children; however, adults who’ve never had chickenpox as a kid can still develop this infection as an adult. Chickenpox results in fluid-filled bumps that are red and often extremely itchy. They can appear anywhere on the body and face and because it’s caused by a virus you or your child may also develop fatigue, fever, loss of appetite or body aches.

The good news is that there is a vaccine to prevent chickenpox. Chickenpox will go away on its own; however, it’s important to see your doctor right away if your child has a fever over 102 degrees F, develops shortness of breath or a stiff neck, or starts vomiting.

Contact Dermatitis

Do you notice a scaly, itchy, raw-looking red rash that has developed on a very specific areas of the body? If so, it could be a form of dermatitis, which occurs when the skin is exposed to an allergen.

Contact dermatitis can be soothed with cool compresses and isn’t harmful or dangerous; however, you may want to talk to your Chicago, IL, dermatologist to find out what’s triggering your dermatitis symptoms.

Eczema

Are you dealing with white flaking patches of skin that may appear oily or itchy? If so, you could be dealing with eczema (also referred to as atopic dermatitis). If you have been diagnosed with allergies or asthma, you may be more at risk for developing eczema.

Eczema symptoms come and go, often triggered by certain irritants or factors such as alcohol, stress or hot weather. Talk with your dermatologist about whether you have eczema and what could be triggering your symptoms to prevent flare-ups.

Rosacea

If you notice a rash develop on your face (primarily the cheeks and nose) it could be caused by a condition known as rosacea. This chronic problem will often fade and return, often triggered by alcohol, stress, sun exposure and spicy foods. Rosacea results in facial flushing that may feel dry, irritated or sensitive.

You may also notice little bumps forming within the rash. Since there are a variety of conditions that could cause facial rashes it’s important that you see a dermatologist if the problem persists.
