Protect Your Skin Even In Winter

Don’t let the harsh winter elements wreak havoc on your beautiful skin.

While winter does offer some rather picturesque landscapes, all the harsh elements can really take a toll on your skin. From the rough skin protectionwinds to the frigid temperatures, there are many things that can irritate your skin. However, our Chicago, IL, dermatologist, Dr. Elizabeth Fahrenbach, has some helpful hints for how to keep your skin safe during the tough Midwest winters.

Use the Right Products for the Job

Moisturizer is a must-have product all year long, but it will become your best friend during the colder months. If your moisturizer is a thin lotion that you are more likely to use during the summer months, you’ll want to replace it with a thicker, creamier moisturizer that doesn’t contain a fragrance (some fragrances can irritate skin or cause other issues).

The best time to apply moisturizer is when skin is still a bit damp. Apply a moisturizer to your body after getting out of the shower. When it comes to showering, avoid standing for long periods of time in hot water, which can really dry skin out. Instead, use warm water and don’t stay in too long. Once you are out of the show, pat dry and apply a moisturizer. You should also apply a moisturizer to your face at night immediately after cleansing.

Don’t Skip the Sunscreen

Yes, we know it’s winter and days are chillier and darker and cloudier, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still incur sun damage. Even if it’s cloudy the sun’s rays still shine through, and, while you may not exactly burn from winter rays, they can still be reflected in water and snow and increase your exposure.

That’s why it’s so important to wear protective clothes that shield from the elements and apply a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Look for a sunscreen that contains zinc or titanium oxide, and if you have no clue what sunscreen would work best for you then ask our Chicago skin doctor for some recommendations.
